Karen’s commitment to technical excellence in handling conveyancing matters and litigation matters along with her genuine passion for exceptional client service, has earned her some reputation within her industry. With extensive experience in Sarawak’s legal landscape, Karen provides strategic advice on land issues, development projects and statutory compliance.
In establishing her own law firm, Karen’s intention was to build a practice that went above and beyond the already lofty service and quality standards set by the country’s top-tier firms. She firmly believes that great client experiences are about more than just successful legal outcomes. Karen’s Chinese-Iban heritage enables her to connect across cultures, with fluency in Mandarin, English, Bahasa Melayu, Iban, and Foochow dialect.
In 2015, Karen graduated from the University of the West of England, Bristol, United Kingdom, with a Second Upper Division with Honours in LL.B Law. She subsequently obtained the Certificate of Legal Practice and Certificate in Shipping Law. Prior to commencing her pupillage at Tay & Partners, one of the country’s top-tier law firms that provided her with exposure to corporate and banking litigation, corporate merger and acquisition and intellectual property law, Karen served as a Corporate Action Investigation Analyst at CitiGroup Transactional Services Malaysia (CTSM) in Kuala Lumpur.
Karen was then admitted to the High Court of Malaya as an Advocate and Solicitor. Additionally, in the same year, she worked as the Protection Unit Intern at the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Kuala Lumpur.
In 2020, Karen returned to Kuching, Sarawak, where she was admitted as an Advocate at the High Court of Sabah and Sarawak. Prior to her relocation to Bintulu, Sarawak, Karen primarily engaged in civil and criminal litigation throughout her tenure in Kuching. Subsequently, she received a job offer from one of Sarawak’s prominent and leading law firms, which also serves as the panel law firm for most banks and project developers in the region. Karen specialized in handling all conveyancing matters in Bintulu for the firm, including various development projects and project financing. Upon setting up her own law firm in July 2024, Karen handles conveyancing and general litigation matters in Bintulu.
Additionally, she has participated in the National Symposium on Islamic Banking and Finance. Karen is actively involved in her professional development, regularly attending numerous training sessions, seminars, and conferences throughout the year.
Karen serves as a branch committee member of the Advocate’ Association of Sarawak, a member of Bintulu Chinese Chamber of Commerce & Industry (BCCCI), committee member of International Malaysian Society of Maritime Law (IMSML) and co-founder of the Elite Volleyball Club in Bintulu. Beyond her legal career, she is a passionate volunteer, having contributed to a wide range of community projects.
